General Anesthesia that is. Back in June on Tuesday the 9th Brody had to go down to the outpatient hospital to be put to sleep to have some dental work done. We tried to have it done in the office back in March, but after being sedated and 2 attempts it wasn’t going to work, he has a major gag reflex, and a tiny mouth, and while he was sedated he was scared and started to cry, so the Dr recommended he be put under.. the whole procedure would take about 2 hours and there was no way he could keep his mouth open that long being awake… so the morning of the 9th we got up and took a sleepy little guy (who couldn’t have anything to eat or drink) down to the medical center around 9:30 am.
we checked in and they took his temp and vital signs and we filled out lots of paperwork..
after waiting a good hour and a half they finally were ready to take our baby back, it was heartbreaking, but we knew it needed done (he had 4 cavities that needed filled in between the cracks of his teeth)
daddy had a tough time watching them take his baby back, he had to go out into the hall to cry for a few min, then went outside for some fresh air… : (
we did a lot of talking, praying, phone games, facebooking, texting for a good 2 and a half hours and FINALLY the dr came out and told us he was in recovery and should be waking up in the next 30-45 min and then we could go back to get him…and right about 45 min later he woke up and when they took us back we could hear him kind of whimpering and coughing with a really hoarse voice, brandon took him first, he was a little scared and his throat was sore you could tell from the breathing tube.. his voice was really bothering him he kept trying to clear his throat and couldn't so it irritated him.. but after about 20 min we got him calmed down and in the car and he finally got to drink some sips of apple juice we had for him (poor baby hadn't had anything since about 9:30 pm the night before, and it was about 3:30 pm) he loved his juice and ended up drinking all of it over a 30 min period (they told us to have him drink slowly at first)
then by about 5 he was getting hungry so we gave him a couple crackers and he did fine with those so he had some dinner around 6 and did fine the rest of the night, his voice stayed raspy for about 2 days but after that he was fine. I’m so thankful it is behind us now it was SUCH a pain ($3800 out of pocket expenses after insurance paid another $4000, plus having a 4 year old being put under is emotionally draining) praying this is our last time we ever have to go through something like this!
